Westford Flags Lowered to Half-Staff in Honor of Dolly Parton
Flags across Westford will fly at half-staff this week in honor of country music icon Dolly Parton, while the J.V. Fletcher Library rolled out a slate of fall programming from author talks to a stickerpalooza for kids.
TOWN HALL
The town announced that United States and Massachusetts flags will be lowered to half-staff beginning Tuesday, August 25 at 6 p.m. through sunset on September 1, marking the memory of Dolly Parton. Separately, the Westford Water Department's Stage III outdoor water restrictions remain in effect, and residents should note the town's PAYT overflow bags will soon be available at local retailers, both continuations of earlier announcements this week.
Public works crews continue work on the Boston Road reconstruction and the ongoing waterline construction project on Groton Road (Route 40), part of the town's broader infrastructure push this construction season.
SCHOOLS
The Westford School Committee is scheduled to meet Monday, August 31, according to the town's public calendar, as the district heads into the final stretch before the new school year begins.
COMMUNITY & ARTS
The J.V. Fletcher Library, still operating from its temporary location at 515 Groton Road during the ongoing building renovation project, announced several new fall events. An Adult Nonfiction Book Club meets Tuesday, September 1, followed by a virtual Job Search Help session for adults 50 and over on September 2 focused on self-assessment and mindset.
The library also unveiled a virtual author series, "Historical Fiction Book Recs with Bestselling Author Jane Healey," kicking off September 8 at 6:30 p.m. and continuing monthly through December. Younger patrons can look forward to Stickerpalooza on September 10 from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Westford Recreation Department's Roudenbush Community Center, and the library's Friends group is preparing its Fall Book Sale, offering thousands of gently used books, CDs, DVDs and audiobooks. The library will close for Labor Day weekend, from Saturday, September 5 through Monday, September 7, reopening Tuesday, September 8 at 10 a.m.
